Old Boys’ cricket encounter at Nuwara Eliya

One of the prime events during the Holiday season in Nuwara Eliya is the Battle of the Oldies -Cricket Encounter between the old boys of St Xavier’s College and Gamini National College, Nuwara Eliya for the Mayor’s Challenge Cup. The event has been planned for the 16th April 2014 at the Race course Grounds under the patronage of many dignitaries and distinguished guests.


Four years ago this event commenced for the first time in Nuwara Eliya where the history of cricket goes back to the year 1856 and the history of Cricket at St Xavier’s College goes back to 1928 .


A number of past cricketers of yesteryear and a large number of school children and the public are expected to witness this event.


Cricket had been in its peak during the 50’s in Nuwara Eliya .There had been a number of major tournaments that were keenly contested by Clubs such as the Ceylon Brewery ,Public Services Club, the Police, TRI, Cargils, SXCOBA, the Archives, Forest Club..etc were represented by die hard cricketers such as Ivor Newman, Nadarajah, M.A.Sinnen, A,Rafeek ,Hema Weerasinghe , I.W.Athukorale, and I.C.Hepponstal.


The inauguration of the Battle of the Oldies in 2011 is considered as the revival of this old game of cricket in Nuwara Eliya that  was based on the theme ‘Unity in Diversity’. The event augurs well for the promotion of  cricket at Gamini College and at St Xavier’s College.


The Second Cricket Encounter was promoted to the Nuwara Eliya Mayor’s Challenge Cup in 2012.Enthusiastic participation, the picturesque surrounding of the ground and the carnival atmosphere created a real feast during the match that was witnessed by many.


A number of past Cricketers of yesteryear and a large number of school children and the public are expected at the match. The proceedings of the day will be filled with entertainment and surprises along with the ‘Battle of the Oldies’.


The Old Xaverians team will be captained by Chrishantha Vanapushpa while the Old Gaminians team will be captained by Keith Chandrasena who are prominent players of their respective teams while Chandana Fernando who has represented the Engineering Faculty Cricket team of the University of Peradeniya, Rukmal Fernando and Keith Chandrasena both who have represented Sri Lanka in softball cricket and Shantha de Silva of Summer Hill CC  will be sphere heading their teams along with a number of past cricketers.


Umpires from the Kandy Umpires’ Association will adjudge this match while Old Royalist Vipul Fernando will be the Match referee.
