Kavinda asks govt to publish feasibility reports on H’thota airport, port

By Lal Gunesekera

Western Provincial Councillor from the Gampaha District Dr. Kavinda Jayawardana yesterday (24) said that for any project there had to be a feasibility study/report and if there were such reports on the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Airport and Magampura Harbour, the government should publish them for the information of the people.

He told the Island that he doubted whether there was a feasibility report on these two "White Elephants" and also the proposed phase 2 at the Magampura Harbour which was to have an artificial island with hotels, shopping arcades etc, which was quite unnecessary with the country’s economy in ruins.

With the country getting into deeper debt, Dr. Jayawardana wondered how the country was going to pay back and what the benefits that would accrue from the airport and harbour to the Hambantota District. He said that they might be upgraded in the future and probably use them on a different scale.

He said that the government should have further upgraded the Colombo Port and Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) instead and other ports in the country mainly used by fishermen. He said that rather than going in for mega projects, the government should attend to the needs of the poor people, who found it difficult to purchase their essential requirements.

Dr. Jayawardana also said that the government should not only concentrate on the Hambantota District, but also in other cities around the country. He also said that the Rajapaksa regime should build up the economy from grassroots level and in order to pay back the debt the people were being taxed heavily. He said that the country could not afford to get involved in mega projects unless it was very essential.
