‘Two wards at Kandy hospital give way for gym, restroom’

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Government Nursing Officers Association (GNOA) yesterday accused the Health Ministry and the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) of being instrumental in converting two paying wards at the Kandy Teaching Hospital into a gymnasium and a restroom for doctors. GNOA President, Saman Ratnapriya said that there were people in the Kandy District who preferred to receive treatment in paying wards.

The two wards were closed to the public last August while steps were taken to convert them in to a gym and a restroom for doctors. The Ministry has also allocated a large amount of money for purchasing equipment, Ratnapriya said, alleging that ward equipment and beds had been dumped into another room.

Ratnapriya said the union would write to the Health Minister on the issue.

Responding to allegations GMOA Spokesman, Dr. Naveen de Soysa said that there had been an understanding when the paying wards were built that a part of it would be allocated as a rest area for doctors. "Doctors provide a 24 hour service unlike nurses who work on shifts." It was being furnished with membership funds, he said, denying any knowledge of a gym being built. However, the GNOA President should concentrate more on working towards developing the nursing service than attempting to grab what belongs to others.
