Soldiers who saved the lives of two girls

The army has decided to promote four soldiers who risked their lives to rescue the lives of two children thrown into the Nilwala Ganga by their father, who was found dead later.


A ceremony to felicitate the heroic act of soldiers would take place at the Army Headquarters on April 30 with the participation of Army Commander Lt. Gen. Daya Ratnayake.


Three privates E. H. de Silva, H. K. C. Madushanka, of the Third Gemunu Watch and K.M.P.S Pushpakumara of the Engineer Service Regiment would be promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal and Lance Corporal S.S Manage of the Third Gemunu Watch would be promoted to the rank of Corporal, Army Media Director Brig. Jayanath Jayaweera told The Island.


Four-year-old, Chathumika Dineshi and the two-year-old Vihansi Savindi were thrown into the Nilwala River by their father around 11.00 am on Thursday (24), but those four army personnel who were near the bridge at that time, swung into action and saved them.
