Army had already recruited 1,000 professional and Tamil speaking civilians in the North and there were over 5000 applicants, Military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said yesterday.
Addressing the weekly media conference at Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development at Kollupitiya, Brig. Wanigasooriya said that the army had only 1,000 vacancies at the moment.
He stressed that any citizen could join the army or any other force if he or she was qualified to do so. One of his own subordinates, a Tamil from Killinochchi had died in the battle field in Mulaitivu, he said.
Referring to police statistics on rape cases committed in the North and in the country from 2007 and 2009 and 2009 to 2012, the Brigadier said that only seven men in the armed forces were accused of rape in the North.
