Docs to pull out of maternity wards beginning with Kalutara Hospital

As nurses insist on midwifery training

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday warned its members would withdraw from wards service should unauthorised persons enter them.

Addressing the media GMOA spokesman Dr. Naveen Soysa said that Visiting Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (VOGs) and doctors had withdrawn from wards at the Kalutara General Hospital after nurses training for midwifery services had entered them disrupting normal services. However, he warned that doctors in other hospitals would follow suit if the Health Ministry failed to arrest the situation.

Fielding questions Assistant Secretary of the GMOA, Dr. Nalinda Herath said that the Health Minister had not made a serious attempt to solve the problem.

The GMOA however said the doctors would continue to attend to emergencies even if they withdrew from wards.
