Five cops responsible for arrest of Tiger suspects to be honoured

By Norman Palihawadana

The IGP has decided to honour five policemen responsible for the arrest of the members of the LTTE who were trying to revive the now defunct terrorist outfit, in the North.

They are OIC Pallai police, Inspector Ananda Rajapaksha and five policemen attached to the same station.

The ceremony will be held at the police headquarters soon.

The move to revive the LTTE was revealed after a Tiger activist named Augustine had been arrested while pasting posters in Pallai to the effect that the now defunct terrorist outfit would be revived soon.

Under interrogation the suspect divulged the plans by the Tamil diaspora to revive the organsation and the financial support given by those living overseas.

On information revealed by the suspect his accomplices were taken into custody and that led to the hunt for their leaders Gopi and Theviyan.

The duo fled to the jungles of Nedunkerny after the former had shot and injured a sub inspector. They were later killed in a confrontation with the army.

Following the arrest of the suspects a leading businessman from Vavuniya was arrested by police as large sums of money had been remitted to his account by LTTE sympathisers living abroad.

The police intelligence is also keeping close tab on a Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian who has close links with the Tiger activists.

A special police team a few days ago arrested Subhani the daughter of LTTE member Karuppan Ganeshan and his son-in-law Ravindran Ganeshan while they were attempting to flee the country with their child at the BIA. KaruppaN Ganeshan was arrested by the Anuradhapura police.

They are being interrogated.
