Matara hosts first ever Southern International Trade Exhibition

Development projects in the South had received a boost  with Matara hosting the first ever Southern International Trade Exhibition (SITE 2014), Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Allahapperuma, said on Saturday.


Speaking after declaring open the three day event at the Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium, the Minister noted that it had the potential to attract exhibitors from outside Asia as well. He commended the organizer CDC Events headed by Chandra Wickremesinghe for picking Matara as the venue for SITE’s inaugural edition. The exhibition concludes today.


"I am glad that you brought a Show of this nature to the South. It would give a boost to industry and commerce in this region. I wish you all success in developing the project to greater heights", Alahapperuma said adding that the construction of the Colombo-Matara Expressway, could not have come at a better time, making it that much easier for the participants.


Also present on the occasion  were Matara District MP and former Sri Lanka Cricket Captain Sanath Jayasuriya, Matara Mayor S. Hadunge, President of the Matara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry Metha Vidanagamachi and Hambantota Chamber of Commerce Director Azmi Thasim.


Managing Director of CDC Events, Imran Hassan said that they were happy to have launched SITE from the Southern Capital in collaboration with the Matara District Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "The exhibition is open from 2 to 10 p.m. on each of the three days. Amidst the serious business transactions taking place, the crowds that flow in are also able to relax with some good entertainment and delicious food and drink that is on offer."


With over 150 exhibitors participating the event has drawn stake holders industry leaders, investors and businessman in the financial, construction, food and beverage, packaging, automobile, Information Technology, printing, apparel, agricultural and fisheries sectors, he observed.


Hassan said that an investor forum targeting foreign and expatriate investors was being held on the sidelines of SITE 2014, with the aim of projecting the South as one of the best destinations for investments. "We are also conducting industry specific seminars targeting diverse sectors in the South together with a Port Forum in order to showcase the centrality of Galle and Hambantota as sea ports, and to project Hambantota as the maritime hub of South East Asia."


SITE 2014, he pointed out had revolutionised the mode in which business was conducted and had the potential to evolve into a comprehensive platform through which markets with vast growth potential could meet and engage with businessmen in the South. Hassan noted that it had also given exposure to the Southern SME sector in the rest of the country and the South Asian region at large.


Project Director at CDC Events, Ajantha Ismail said that the exhibition was endorsed by the government and supported by  the Convention and Tourism Promotion Bureau."The principal sponsor of the event is Deen Brothers while Nippon Paint Lanka Limited was appointed the Silver Sponsor. The other official partners include Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Dart Global Logistics, Central Finance PLC (Leasing) and Metropolitan  (Office  Automation).Dart Global, a pioneer in the Sri Lankan freight logistics industry apart from playing a leading role at SITE 2014,has also commissioned its operations in Jaffna  and Trincomalee, in order to add value to the emerging markets."
