Sirisena reveals corruption in Health Ministry

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has said that corruption is rampant in the procurement division of his Ministry and some officials attached to it are minting money.

When he assumed duties there had been a severe shortage of saline in hospitals and therefore he had been compelled to import saline urgently, Minister Sirisena said.

No health minister before him had been able to build a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, Minister Sirisena said at the Dealers Convention held recently at the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation in Colombo on May 6.

Minister Sirisena said that a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing company would be set up soon in Sri Lanka to manufacture almost all pharmaceuticals as well as surgical gloves and gauze.

Minister Sirisena said some multinational companies had tried to bribe him but he would never betray the country.
