Health Minister pins hopes on proposed new drug policy

The  much-delayed National Drug Policy, renamed the National Medicinal Drug and Cosmetic Devices Regulatory Authority Act was being studied as a draft Bill by the Constitutional Committee before it was submitted to the Cabinet, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said yesterday.

He told The Island that as soon as the draft Bill had been thoroughly studied and relevant omissions and insertions were made by the Constitutional Committee, it would be submitted to the Cabinet. "The drug mafia has left no stone unturned to block the implementation process of the Act since its preliminary stage but we have defeated those sinister moves", the Minister said.

Minister Sirisena assured that following Cabinet approval, copies of the National Medicinal and Cosmetic Devices Authority Act would be made available to all the drug companies, the Chamber of Drug Industry and to the public for their comments, suggestions and objections.

The Health Minister said that under the National Medicinal and Cosmetic Devices Regulatory Act, two powerful institutions would be established.  A National Drug Regulatory Authority and National Drug Quality Assurance Laboratory would be set up for its implementation, he added.
