New canning factory produces 1,640 MT of fish

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne told Parliament yesterday that fish canning factory at Galle since its opening in 2012 had processed around 1,640 MT of fish.

 Responding to a question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake, the minister said that the factory had been set up as a joint venture by the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation and  Happy Cook Pvt Ltd and had produced 89, 213,300 cans of fish.

Those cans of fish had been released to the market under the brand names Ceyfish, Tess, Sea Queen, Chammai and Mackerel.

 Asked to state to the House the amount paid as local taxes by the cannery, the minister said that around Rs 150 million on value added basis had been paid. (SI)
