Sydney based pole vaulter Mudith picked in SL team for Asian Junior Championships

Teams picked for Asian Junior Athletics and Youth Olympics trials

Sydney based pole vaulter Mudith Jayasekara who had represented Australia ones in a junior competition has been included in a team of 20 to represent Sri Lanka at the forthcoming Asian Junior Athletics Championships, while three out of four medalists of last year’s Asian Youth Games have found a place each in the teams for both the Asian Junior Championships and the Youth Olympic Trials according to Athletics Association of Sri Lanka sources.

Jayasekara who ones represented Australia in a Youth Championship there, competed here when the AASL hosted the Junior National Championship last week. Jayasekara, competing with a borrowed pole from Sri Lanka champion Ishara Sandaruwan cleared a height of 4.5 metres to impress selectors.

Jayasekara is said to have a better personal best performance which is in the medal winning range in the Junior Asian level.

Kathaluwa Central sprinter Nirmali Madushika, Kuliyapitiya Central athlete Dilhani Fernando and hurdler Anuruddha Vidusanka (of St. Mary’s College, Kegalle) who won a medal each at the last year’s Asian Youth Games have been selected for the above said international events. Akila Ravishanka who won a medal at the last Asian Youth Games is included in the team for the Asian Junior Championships.

While a team of 20 athletes have been selected for the Asian Junior Championships which will be held from June 12-15 in Chinese Taipei, a team of eight have been selected for the Youth Olympics trials which will be held from May 21-22 in Bangkok.
