Police busted a drug ring operated by a Kingpin from inside the Bogambara Remand Prison and took into custody the two couriers with heroin along with a van they were travelling in at Kurunegala on Sunday, police said.

DIG Wayamba Range, Nimal A. Lewke said that initial investigations had revealed that the two suspects had cleverly concealed the 3gms of heroin inside the hot water flask and concealed the flask among some electronic items in the luggage section of the van to escape detection.

He said the two suspects had been detained for further investigation under the direction of SSP of the Kurunegala Police Division Waas Gunawardena.

Police said that one of the suspects had been earlier arrested by the Kurunegala Police for the robbery of a motor cycle and been released on bail from Bogambara Remand Prison recently.

The Kingpin in prison had contacted and instructed him to obtain the drug by paying Rupees 15,000 to a dealer in Minuwangoda and to transport it to a place at Gokarella to be handed over to him in prison, police said.

The Kurunegala Police, on information received, checked the vehicle. Investigations are underway to identify the mastermind in the Bogambara Remand Prison and to ascertain if any other criminal activities were carried out by these suspects, police said.
