Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, who attended the 67th World Health Assembly in Geneva, where he was elected WHO Vice President for the Asia Pacific Region, returned home yesterday.

Minister Sirisena, contacted for comment, said that the World Health Assembly had been held at the WHO head office in Geneva with the participation of many health ministers from around the globe.

He pointed out that the WHO assembly had divided the countries of the world into five zones and vice presidents had been elected to administer each zone to facilitate the smooth functioning of its activities worldwide. He had been elected the vice president for the Asia Pacific Region, he said.

The Sri Lankan government was grateful to the WHO for helping Sri Lanka to eradicate many diseases. It had provided expertise and drugs for that purpose, Minister Sirisena said.

Health issues of many countries had been discussed including those affecting Sri Lanka, the minister said.
