It is in people’s self-interest to fight dengue

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday pointed out that most parents and their schoolchildren who did not want to come to clean their respective schools of dengue causing mosquitoes on Saturdays and Sundays, had now volunteered to carry out the task even on weekdays having realised the gravity of threat.

The government would not mind if the schools had to be closed during weekdays for cleaning purposes as dengue was raising its ugly head once again. "Although most parents and their children were reluctant to come on Saturdays and Sundays to schools to eradicate mosquito breeding places, the parents have now realised the gravity of the situation and have now opted to participate in cleaning activities even during weekdays", he said.

Minister Sirisena added that though dengue spread had shown an upward trend in fairly recent times, the death rates from dengue could be minimised. It could be attributed to the well-trained medical and nursing staff detailed at the hospitals. Even the some leading schools in Colombo were found to be possible dengue mosquito breeding grounds. It was the duty of all parents to participate in dengue eradication programmes.
