Technology Research and Atomic Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said that though the government had taken a bold decision to ban harmful agro-chemicals, some pro-agrochemical groups had blocked its implementation.

About six harmful agro-chemicals were responsible for causing kidney failure, but no action had been taken so far to implement their ban, because the agro-chemical companies were so powerful that the government was helpless, the Minister said at a function to distribute equipment to manufacture Indigenous Medicine to investors held at the National Engineering and Research Development Centre Colombo on May 26.

Minister Ranawaka said that due to the widespread use of harmful agro-chemicals the water sources were contaminated. It was the bounden duty of the decision-makers to ban all the harmful agro-chemicals, he stressed.

Minister Ranawaka said his Ministry had formulated a five-year investment plan to encourage people to grow indigenous medicinal plants. He said he thought it would be a boon to the country’s economy.
