Health Ministry accused of not filling important posts

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) General Committee member Dr. Navin de Soysa yesterday accused the Health Ministry of having taken no action to appoint personnel to the posts of Additional Secretaries––Medical Services and Public Health.

Dr. Soysa pointed said the Public Service Commission (PSC) had recommended the Health Ministry to call for interview and select two additional secretaries as Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva had been appointed Director of Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority and Dr. Sujatha Senaratne had retired from the Ministry. It was the responsibility of the Ministry to advertise the vacancies and hold an interview to select additional secretaries. But, no action had been taken by the Ministry to hold interviews to fill the two vacancies.

Dr. Soysa added that the duties entrusted to the two additional secretaries were important as regards patient care and public health service.

The additional secretary (medical services) was supposed to deal with the medical services provided to the patients by doctors. He was also responsible for maintaining adequate numbers of both medical and nursing staff and medicine in hospitals.

He said that dengue control, proper garbage disposal and other public health activities had suffered as an additional secretary (Public Health) had not been appointed so far. The GMOA would urge the Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Health Secretary Mrs. Sudharama Karunaratne to appoint the two additional secretaries on the recommendation of the PSC, he said.
