The Epidemiology Unit (EU) says a mosquito control programme is now underway in 84 high risk Grama Niladaree divisions in Colombo.

A spokesperson for the EU said that 700 teams including security forces personnel, police and Health Department workers were participating in the three day programme. A check list has been handed for each institution, homestead and premises.

The Colombo MC Public Health Department (PHD), when contacted, said that over 17 areas including Mattakkuliya, Modera, Bloemendhal, Maligawatte, Borella, Cinnamon Gardens, Narahenpita, Thimbirigasyaya, Havelock Town and Wellawatta had been identified as high risk areas.

The Chief Medical Officer, CMC PHD, Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuny said that more than 310 persons had been identified as suspect dengue cases from the beginning of the month to date. He said that the city had seen a 30 percent increase in the number of dengue cases reported within the last two months.

The number of cases reported last month was 232. Dr. Wijayamuny attributed it to intermittent rains coupled with a high temperature. The mosquito larvae did not get washed away by the showers while the high temperature increased the mosquitoes’ appetite, he added.
