Sleuths of the Colombo Crime Division (CCD), who questioned Jathika Bala Sena (JBS) leader, Ven. Watareka Vijitha thera, at the Colombo National Hospital on Friday, are now probing certain information he had revealed.

The monk had told police investigators that he was aware of the identity of the persons who abducted and attacked him. He was stripped and set upon and had sustained injuries as a result. Later, they had dumped him near the Hirana bridge in Panadura.

"We are conducting further investigations on the basis of the statement given by the monk", police spokesman, SSP Ajith Rohana said yesterday.

The prelate is an elected member of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) administered Mahiyangana Pradeshiya Sabha.

Police said that a passer-by who found the monk with his hands and legs tied near the Bolgoda river alerted the police. A robe was lying beside him. A National Identity Card found at the scene had the name Ven. Watareka Vijitha thera.

The monk was initially admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital as he had suffered cut injuries, police said.

Some residents had claimed they had observed a three-wheeler speeding away from the scene, according to police.

The prelate has come under threat from the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and had been in hiding for some time following attempts to harm him.
