Jailers interdicted over drug dealer’s escape

By Madura Ranwala

Commissioner General of Prisons, C. Pallewela yesterday interdicted two jail guards of the Mahara Prison after a notorious drug peddler being treated at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama, had escaped from their custody.

Pallewela told The Island that drug peddler, Dewakage Thusitha Chamara alias Dilan (29) of No. 63/17, Magazine road, Borella had been arrested with one-and a-half kilos of heroin by the Police Narcotics Bureau.

The drug peddler had escaped around 12.15 a.m. yesterday, police said.

Prison sources said there was suspicion that the guards might have helped the prisoner. "I have called in the Criminal Investigations Department to conduct a probe as no prisoner could have escaped had guards followed proper procedure," Pallewela stressed.

Police spokesman SSP Ajit Rohana yesterday requested the public to contact the OIC of Ragama police station on 0112957197 if they had any information about the prisoner on the run.

The escapee had a tattoo on his right arm, the police said.
