Half of school vans in A’pura found unfit

Checks conducted by the police school on vehicles in Anuradhapua yesterday revealed that more than half of them were not roadworthy.

According to the police 150 school buses, 100 school vans and three wheelers used for transporting schoolchildren were checked.

Most of them had faulty gear and brake systems, the police said.

"We gave the owners of those vehicles two weeks to repair their vehicles and produce them for inspection by the traffic police," a senior police officer said, warning that non-compliance would be met with legal action.

In early June a Special Committee was appointed by Private Transport Services Minister C. B. Ratnayaka to devise a strategy to monitor the conditions of vehicles transporting schoolchildren.

He said he had received many complaints from parents and children about the unroadworthy vehicles being used for school transport. Stern action would be taken against those who exposed children’s lives to danger by transporting them in rickety vehicles, the minister warned, requesting the public to come forward and make complaints to the police or him direct.
