Democratic Left Front Leader and National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara yesterday said that the public perception that the government had failed to take appropriate action against those responsible for recent communal riots in the country was fair.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo yesterday Minister Nanayakkara said that though the people believed that the government had kept silent on the matter, it was unfair if the UNP used it as an election slogan.

"I don’t say the government doesn’t take any action against communal riots but there were some lapses that made the public believe so," he added.

Minister Nanayakkara stressed that the government’s wrong decisions, inaction and non-implementation of law and order had resulted in communal violence.

Responding to a query, he said that the then UNP government was responsible for the racial riots of July 1983 therefore they couldn’t point a finger at the Rajapaksa government.
