Docs responsible – GMOA

Negligence in maternal cases

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Government Medical Officers’ Association yesterday said that the Attorney-General had informed them that in case of medical negligence in a maternal case it was the doctor who was answerable.

Addressing a media conference at its head office, GMOA General Committee member Dr. Navin de Soysa said the Medical Ordinance provisions specifically mentioned that the midwife was responsible for childbirth and if there was any medical negligence in a maternity case it was the respective doctor who would be called by the court.

Dr. Soysa said that some nursing trade unions had asked the nurses to work in the labour rooms. But, they were ignorant of the contents of the Medical Ordinance.

He pointed out that the College of Obstetricians had unanimously decided to refrain from teaching the nurses midwifery.

It was of the view that it was the midwife who was responsible for childbirth. The GMOA would write a letter to Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundara who had appointed a committee to investigate the nurse-midwife issue, not to sign any document in favour of the nurses.
