Construction of pylons in lagoon:

CEB overcomes fishers’ resistance

by Ifham Nizam

Plans are underway to pump in additional millions of rupees to expedite the third phase of the country’s first coal fired power plant complex at Norochcholai in view of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s arrival.

A senior Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) engineer told The Island that Power and Energy Ministry had managed to clear some longstanding issues with the fishing community opposed to the construction of high tension lines through the lagoon to Anuradhapura, stretching some 98 km. Only 18 km have so far been covered.

Meanwhile, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) officials said that though they had not officially received any information of the visit of President Jinping, they were expecting him here in September or October.

However, with regard to the expediting of the construction of the new high tension power lines by the CEB, they didn’t give a specific time frame.

Earlier this week, Power and Energy Ministry Secretary, M. M. C. Ferdinando told The Island the CEB would do its utmost to connect the third phase of the plant to the national grid by the end of September.
