Dharmaraja scouts create history with a Guinness World Record



The 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group celebrated the Centenary celebrations with a Guinness World-Record by creating the world largest neckerchief measures 53.7m x 37.1 m (176 ft 2.4 inches x 125 ft 8.4 inches x 121 ft 8.4 inches) and the world largest woggle measures 1.03m (3 ft 4.55 inches) in diameter and 1m (3 ft 3.37 inches) in height. This record was measured at the Dharmaraja College, Kandy in February 2014 by the official record adjudicators authorised to verify the authenticity of the setting and breaking of records employed by the Organisation of Guinness World Records.


The aim of this event is have Dharmaraja recorded in the most prestigious and worldwide selling book while celebrating 100th anniversary of 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group and organised by the Rover Crew of 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scouts with project coordinators, Dharshana Perera, Chulla Pethryagoda and Buddhika Karunathilaka, according to the organisers of the event.


The 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group’s very first great achievement, the "King’s Flag" which they won for three consecutive years––in 1917, 1918 and 1919. The flag was traditionally awarded to a troop in the British Colonies that had the largest number of King Scouts on September 30 in each year.


The 1st Kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group was formed by late John Henry de Saram, the Ceylon’s first native Chief Commissioner of Ceylon Scout Movement in 1913 with the assistance of late K. F. Billimoria, then principal of Dharmaraja College, Kandy.


In addition to the Guinness World Record, 1st Kandy Scouts were awarded the Sri Lanka’s ‘Best Scout Group Award’ consecutively for three years from 2009 to 2011 at the Annual Awards Ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Scout Association, last week at the Royal College, Colombo.
