SLFP to set in motion vibrant Presidential polls campaign

Amidst squabbling amongst opposition political parties on a common presidential candidate, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, has unveiled plans for one of the strongest presidential propaganda campaigns, political sources said.

The SLFP has already set in motion an initiative to convene meetings at electoral level across the country, except the North and the East, party sources said yesterday.

Though the UPFA government is of the view that the pulse of the people should be tested by going ahead with the Uva PC elections before contemplating any other poll, the sources indicated that a snap presidential election cannot be ruled out.

It would be "pulling the rug under the feet of the opposition" if the Uva poll was put on hold and a presidential election called for later in the year, the sources opined.

Apart from the strengthening the SLFP "Pancha Maha Balavegaya" — Sangha, Guru, Govi, Veda and Kamkaru wings — steps are also being taken to enroll new members, restructure and reactivate meetings of the SLFP women and youth fronts under the helm of Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa respectively, the sources said.

On Saturday, the electoral level meeting of the Eambukkana electorate was held presided by SLFP General Secretary, Minister Maithripala Sirisena with participation of the Chief Minister of the Sabragamuwa province Mahipala Herath and Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake.

The SLFP Central Committee, which last met last week presided by President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed senior Minister W. D. J. Seniviratne to chair the party’s Nominations Board for the Uva PC. It will comprise Ministers Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, A. H. M. Fowzie and Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake.

The Board is scheduled to start sittings at the SLFP HQ at Darley Road on Monday, July 28.
