Commonwealth Games begins tomorrow

Sri Lanka pin hopes for medals during the Commonwealth Games on three athletes when the event gets underway tomorrow in Glasgow, Scotland. More than 100 athletes will represent the country in 13 different sports.

The medal prospects for Sri Lanka during the Commonwealth Games are Christine Merrill, Niluka Karunaratne and Heshan Unamboowe.

Niluka Karunaratne, who overcame word’s eighth ranked player Kenichi Tago of Japan 2-0 in the last Olympics and currently ranked 42nd will be in good shape for the event.

Merrill will be competing in the 400 Metre hurdles in this year’s Commonwealth Games. She also competed in the Women’s 400 Metre hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics. She was eliminated in the first round but broke her own record clocking 57.15 seconds. Her personal best of 56.45 also ranks as the National Record.

Unamboowe, who was ranked 42nd in the 2012 Olympics in the 100 Metre backstroke event will be taking part in the 50 and 100 Metre backstroke events in this year’s Commonwealth games.
