Colombo High Court Judge, Wimal Nambuwasam, on Monday acquitted and discharged from all charges of Bribery and corruption the Principal of the Maha Maya Balika Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and the deputy principal the same school.

The principal is U. A. Hewawasam Sriyani Chandrika and the deputy Principal Sumana Galagedara.

They had been indicted on February 19, 2008 for accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000 to admit a child to Grade One.

The judge said that Bribery Commission had failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the charges alleged by them. Further in the year 2006, the education authorities said that no charges should be levied for admissions. But, in a 1992 circular had said that, charges could be levied for school development, upon the issue of a receipt. The guidelines were confusing. The accused persons had issued a receipt after accepting money for school development.

Counsel Jayantha Weerasinghe P.C. and Lal Kularatne appeared for the accused.
