Javelin thrower Nadeka Lakmali finished sixth in the women’s javelin at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday as she cleared a seasonal best distance of 59.04 metres in the final.

Lakmali, who became only the second Sri Lankan behind Susanthika Jayasinghe to feature in a final of a global athletics competition when she cleared 58.16 metres at the IAAF World Championship, 2013 was one of the few medal hopefuls for Sri Lanka.

While Australia’s K. Mickle won gold (65.96 m), S. Viljoen of South Africa (63.16m) and Australia’s K. Roberts (62.95m) won the silver and bronze respectively.


Shiromali Weeraratne, who knocked out her opponent in the first round in 49 seconds, was edged out by world number seven Edith Ogoke of Nigeria in the quarter final bout (69-75kgs) in the women’s boxing competition also on Wednesday. Erandi Silva was beaten by England’s Nicola Adams in the women’s flyweight boxing.

Table Tennis

Rohan Sirisena beat Jamaican T. Symon 3/0 in a men’s singles table tennis match and he was scheduled to meet Hu Li of Singapore.

Sirisena joined Ishara Madurangi in the mixed doubles and was beaten by an Australian duo after a close fight (3-2). The Sri Lankan duo won the second and third sets.


Brothers Niluka and Dinuka Karunaratne and Nadeesha Gayathri and Thilini Hendahewa made advances in the men’s and women’s badminton competitions.
