The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notice on the Minister of Wildlife Resources Conservation, Gamini V. Wijayamuni Zoysa, Conservator General of Wildlife, B. Ratnayake, Venerable Seelakanda Thera of Athkanda Viharaya, Kurunegala and the Ven. Kolonnawe Sri Sumangala Thera of Devuram Viharaya Pannipitiya.

The notice is pertaining to a petition filed by several animal welfare activists who have complained to the court that an adult male elephant and a calf licenced in 2012 as belonging to the aforesaid temple prelates had been found on the compound of Kandalama Walauwe, Mirigama.

It said that the elephants had to be licenced each year. Those negligent temple authorities should no longer be registered as the custodians of those elephants now lodged at the "Ath Athuru Sevana’ elephant sanctuary and at the Pinnawela elephant orphanage.

Counsel Krishmal Warnasuriya appeared for the petitioner.

The bench comprised Justice Upali Abeyratne.

Notice is returnable on September 25, 2014.
