BASL on invitation by American bar

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) said that certain persons with vested interests had given a misinterpretation and a malicious twist to an invitation extended by the American Bar Association (ABA) to the current leadership of the BASL to attend the annual sessions of the ABA to be held in Boston from August 7 to 10, 2014.

"This is an invitation extended by the ABA to the current leadership of the BASL. It is not a scholarship extended to all lawyers, as the persons with vested interests appear to suggest. We, wish to make it clear that it is on this basis that the Executive Committee nominated several key personnel of the BASL including elected office bearers, Zonal Vice Presidents and relevant committee members representing both genders and different communities to attend these sessions and meet the Bar Leaders of the ABA and represent the BASL and its current leadership. The BASL has been informed that the persons selected have met with the criteria specified by the ABA".

No funds of the BASL would be utilised for the visit. All miscellaneous expenses will be met by those who have been nominated to attend the ceremony, the BASL has stressed.
