Health Minister recommends sex education as a subject  for Advanced Level

Health Minister, Maithripala Sirisena has recommended the introduction of sex education to the curriculum of the G.C.E. advanced level course.


 Health Ministry Spokesperson S.M.L. Kumari said that the Minister had also suggested the inclusion of teaching the students the importance of breast feeding. Quoting the Minister’s address on the main day of the National Breast Feeding Week on Tuesday (05) she said that the Minister had expressed concern regarding the number of women who failed to see the importance of breast feeding. Only 75 percent of mothers’ breast fed their young ones. There should be a way to collect social data to find out why 25 percent of them failed to do so.


 The National Breast Feeding Week was initiated on Friday (01) while its theme "Breast feed and find victory in life’ highlighted the importance of breast feeding.


 Kumari said that the people should be made aware about the importance of breast feeding. Awareness should be created among men and women of its importance at least before marriage in order to promote and encourage young mothers to breast feed their children, she added.
