Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has, in a letter to IGP N.K. Illangakoon alleged that the police weren’t doing their duty as regards a complaint made by him on July 24.

The Chief Minister lodged a complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens police after a person named P. W. Piyasena (64) on July 21 evening claimed that he was assaulted by CM Ranatunga with a cricket bat, while he was in his garden. He also alleged that the Chief Minister was also accompanied by a gang .

The police said that the victim, Piyasena of No. 36/09, Melwatte, Rajagiriya, who was being treated at the National hospital accident ward, had sustained injuries to his left arm.

The incident had occurred around 5.00 p.m. on the day of the incident, according to the statement given to the Welikada police by the complainant, he said.

Making a counter complaint to the Welikada police, UPFA MP Ruwan Ranatunga, who is the younger brother of Chief Minister Ranatunge, claimed that the complainant, Piyasena living adjacent to his house at 94/6, Melwatta, Rajagiriya, had scolded him in filth by climbing on to the wall surrounding his house with a knife in hand, while he was inside the house with his wife and children.

Parliamentarian Ranatunga has said that he came out around 5.00 p.m. on that day with his private security guard and inquired from the victim about his indecent behaviour and asked the police to investigate the matter.

Chief Minister Ranatunga urged the IGP to reveal the progress of the investigation carried out by Cinnamon Gardens police to prevent him being accused of an incident he had nothing to do with. The CM pointed out that the police should explain what action the department intended to take against the person who made a false complaint.
