The inter-monsoon that began this week with heavy thunderstorms and high winds in many parts of the country was expected to prevail till the end of November, Meteorology Department said yesterday.

The Department said showers accompanied by lightning and strong winds might prevail during the afternoons and evenings across the country.

Evening thundershowers and strong winds were quite common during the inter-monsoon period, Met Department Duty Meteorologist Nadee Rupasinghe said yesterday.

She told The Island that the main feature of the weather would be lightning which the public should take into account when they engaged in outdoor activities during the evening, she said.

"We officially announced the beginning of inter-monsoon period on Monday," Rupasinghe said.

She also said that the special feature of the inter-monsoon period was that there was no consistent wind flow and thunder accompanied by heavy rains with showers taking place mostly in the evenings.

Meanwhile, the Met Department’s public weather forecast for today (01) says showers or thundershowers will be fairly widespread over the country during the afternoon and night and showers will occur in the Western and Southern coastal areas during the morning too. There may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers, it says

The inter-monsoon conditions generally begin in October and end in November.
