Several parts of the Matara Divisional Secretariat have gone under water following torrential rains during the last couple of days. About 2,618 persons from 955 families have been affected by the floods.

The flood victims would be provided with cooked food and other facilities, Director of the Disaster Management Centre in Matara Maj Saman Balasuriya said.

He said that Matara District and Divisional Secretariats had commenced several relief programmes to help the flood victims.

He said that five deaths had been reported following stormy weather in the area. Of them four had died due to lightning, while the other had drowned.

The inclement weather had destroyed two houses and damaged 10 others, he said.

Meanwhile, the Met Department has said showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thunder showers may occur at a few places in the other sea areas around the island, too.

Winds will be Southwesterly and the speed will be 20-30 kmph.

Generally, the sea areas around the country will not be rough. However, the seas may be temporarily rough during thundershowers.
