Uva: Heavy lobbying  for ministerial stakes

Amidst heavy lobbying for the handful of plum Ministerial positions at the newly elected sixth UVA Provincial Council (UPC), the appointment of its Board of Ministers has been  delayed further for  President Mahinda Rajapaksa  to make the final decision.

Meanwhile, Governor of the Uva  Province Nanda Mathew said that the  inaugural sessions of the council would commence on Thursday (9) at 9.30am.

The Uva Provincial Council will elect its new Chairman and Deputy Chairman on the same day.

Governor Mathew swore in the two elected members of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) to the Uva Provincial Council at the Governor’s office in Badulla around 9.36 am yesterday.

Propaganda Secretary of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) and Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told The Island that former Parliamentarian and Special Economist degree holder from the Kelaniya University Samantha Vidyaratne representing the Badulla District and former Uva Provincial Councillor and Special Management degree holder from the Sri Jayewardenepura University R. M. Jayawardena also representing the Moneragala District had been sworn in by the Governor.

The Leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) Deputy Minister Mutthu Sivalingam said that last time only Senthil Thondaman had been elected to the UVA Provincial Council (UPC) from the Badulla district and appointed to the Board of Ministers (BOM). This time around the CWC had all its three candidates who contested from the Badulla District on the UPFA ticket in the council. They are Senthil Thondaman, Arumugam Ganeshamoorthy and Arumugam Sivalingam, who got the UPFA’s bonus seat.

At 9.30 am on Thursday the new Chief Minister of the UVA Provincial Council Shasheendrakumara Rajapaksa, who was sworn in before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat last Tuesday (30) will assume duties. Thereafter, the Governor is scheduled to swear in the elected members of the United National Party including the Leader of the Opposition Harin Fernando.
