The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday declared victory in an eight-year-old battle with the Cabinet approving the Doctors’ Service Minute last week. A special gazette notification of its implementation was issued by Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday (15).

GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya said that in accordance with the provisions included in the service minute, a doctor should be promoted to Grade 1 after 12 years in service instead of 18 years. Besides, the doctors who had passed Doctor of Medicine (MD) Part I at the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) will also be promoted to Grade 1.

Dr.Padeniya said that though in accordance with the 2006/6 Circular all the professionals, including the

doctors should be promoted to Grade 1 after 10 years. But, that procedure had been relegated to limbo for the last eight years.

The GMOA was grateful to Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundara and Secretary to the Public Administration Ministry, Public Service Commission (PSC) and Cabinet Secretary Sumith Abeysinghe, whose untiring efforts, too, had helped win the doctors’ demand, Dr. Padeniya said.
