Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga said that Ministers and MPs should donate one month’s salary to provide relief to victims of Koslanda landslide disaster.

MP Amaratunga speaking soon after Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera made a ministerial statement on Koslanda disaster in Parliament yesterday, said: "Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe is visiting the landslide hit areas and people at the time I am addressing this House. We have to do something for these people, who are our brethren. Why can’t we donate our salaries for their benefit, to provide them with relief? We are ready to donate. We should set an example to the country. The government should start this programme. We are ready to cooperate with the government. We have no intention to take political advantage over the issue."

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera: "The government has the money to provide relief to the affected people. We can manage without Opposition MPs’ salaries. We are not against donating salaries. If you really feel the need to do so, you can start it, we will support you."
