Transport Minister Kumara Welgama yesterday told Parliament that Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) had suffered a loss of over Rs. 5 billion (Rs 5,164,946,687.09) last year.

Transport Minister Welgama was responding to a query raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake. The Kalutara District MP said that the SLR had experienced a loss of Rs. 3 billion (Rs. 3,816,386,874.16) in 2012.

Asked whether the profit or losses of the SLR had been projected for the year 2014 and 2015, the minister said that the statistical calculations were not ready yet.

The SLR had capital liabilities amounting to Rs. 160,416,207,784.45 and capital reserves amounting to Rs 23,496,692,161.12 as at yesterday, the minister said, noting that the SLR was short of workers though there were 16,111 employees in the department now.

Asked to reveal to the House the cost per employee and profit per employee, the minister said those statistical data were not available.

The SLR had no short term loans, bank overdraft and middle term loans, the Minister said, adding that annuities amounting to Rs. 20,392,878,484.00 had been obtained from the Treasury for capital expenditure.
