It was President Mahinda Rajapaksa who had ensured of the safety of all Sri Lankans and if he had not become the President in 2005 the people would have had to live in fear, Youth Affairs and Skilled Development Minister Dallas Alahapperuma said.

The minister was speaking at a ceremony where Samurdhi allowances allocated by Budget 2015 were granted to over 500 Samurdhi beneficiaries in Dickwella on Wednesday (19).

Alahapperuma recalled that before Mahinda Rajapaksa became President the people had been plagued by terrorism and the UNP government of Ranil Wickremasinghe had not taken any action to protect them. "He only tried to appease the terrorists and the international community so that his political future would be safe," Minister Alahapperuma said. "President Rajapaksa changed it all and today everyone is free to travel to any part of the country without fear of being harmed by terrorists."

Minister Alahapperuma said the UNP leader had asked the government to refrain from taking military action against the LTTE over matters such as depriving people of access to water and try to solve the terrorist problem through negotiations.

He noted that the UNP leader had not been concerned at all about the hardships the people had to face by the terrorist action and wanted only to be in the good books of the terrorists and some foreign powers.

He stated that the victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, at the forthcoming presidential election couldn’t be stopped by anyone. "President Rajapaksa will win the election hands down irrespective of whoever will be the contender."
