Opposition presidential candidate pays homage to Sacred Tooth Relic

KANDY – Common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (24) paid homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at Sri Dalada Maligawa and subsequently called on the prelates of Asgiriya and Malwatte in keeping with custom.

Sirisena was received in Kandy and accompanied to the places of worship by a group of UNP activists.

Among UNPers who accompanied Maithripala Sirisena were parliamentarians Karu Jayasuriya and Lakshman Kirielle. DNA parliamentarian Arjuna Ranatunga too accompanied him. UPFA defector former Deputy Minister M. K. D. S. Gunawardana was also present.

The talks between the Common Presidential Candidate and the prelate of Asgiriya Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera and with the Anunayake Thera of Malwatte Most Venerable Dr. Niyangoda Sri Vijithasiri Thera were not open to the media.

Maithripala Sirisena in a brief meeting with the media personnel at the premises of the Malwatte Anunayake Thera said he was grateful to the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and other leaders of Opposition parties for having selected him as the common opposition presidential Candidate.

Sirisena also pledged that he would establish a corruption free administration once he was elected as the President.

He said his policy statement and election symbol would be made known shortly. He proceeded to Anuradhapura to homage to Sri Maha Bodhi.

Central Provincial Council Members Lucky Jayawardana, Padmalal de Alwis, Chithra Sreemathi Mantilaka, Chanake Ilapperuma Channa Galappattige and former mayors and members of the Kandy MC Kesara Senanayake, Raja Pushpakumara and Suminda Wickremasinghe were among those present.
