The Professor Senaka Bibile Commemoration Association (PSBCA) on Sunday (23) urged Common Opposition Candidate and Former Health Minister, Maithripala Sirisena to reveal those who influenced him and prevented the Health Ministry from implementing the Senaka Bibile Drug Policy.

Member of the Operations Committee PSBCA and President of the All Ceylon Nurses Union (ACNU), Gamini Kumarasinghe said that the implementation of the Senaka Bibile Drug Policy had been included in the Mahinda Chinthana Policy Framework in 2005. The pledge was reiterated in the President’s 2010 manifesto.

In 2012, Minister Sirisena, who was the Health Minister at the time, claimed that the Draft policy had been misplaced. He also alleged that he had received death threats because of it.

Kumarasinghe said the former minister had alleged during the press conference following his crossover to the Opposition on Friday (21) that he had been influenced by higher powers and prevented from implementing the Bibile Drug Policy.

It was a serious allegation and the former Minister should disclose to the public those responsible for influencing him and preventing its implementation, he said.

The Operations Committee Member observed that there had been recurrent drug quality failures in recent years and more failures reported during recent weeks from the Moneragala and Mahiyangana Hospitals.

With a budgetary allocation of Rs. 180 billion for 2015 the Health Ministry should have a proper management in place to ensure the quality of the drugs when purchasing them, the committee added.
