‘Clarity of purpose and values form the baseline of leadership energy, Rajeev Peshawaria, CEO, ICLIF Leadership and Governance Centre based in Kuala Lumpur, said in Colombo recently, sharing his many years’ experience in developing leadership skills in premier companies on three continents.
Peshawaria who has worked for leading corporates, including Morgan Stanley, Coca-Cola, and American Express on this aspect and also authored the book, ‘Too Many Bosses, Too Few Leaders’, said so while addressing the LFC/SLC Directors Symposium - 2014 organized by the Central Bank at the Kingsbury Hotel.
"It is easy to dispense advice about how leaders should direct and motivate their people. It is much harder to have actually done these things yourself and to be able to describe, in highly useful terms, how the best leaders harness their own energy and energize and direct the talents of others to achieve superior performance, he said. Peshawaria filled that practical-insights-gap and went on to provide an essential roadmap for the audience.
"Leadership is a special talent that goes far beyond just being a boss, and he shows that deciding to develop that talent is a critical choice. More often than not, a vital element is used by great leaders to achieve this end—the ability to use the power of mind. Those that routinely practice a mind-stilling technique like meditation or deep prayer seem to be showing more success with mind power than others, thus it’s possible to transmit your leadership energy to others," he said presenting the underlying dynamics of what it takes to be a great leader.
"An organization is a living system. An extraordinary leader gets impressive results by bringing out the best in others by he himself living a life of joy, energy, and meaning.
"Leadership is the art of harnessing human energy towards the creation of a better future. Decide what you want in life. Do you want to lead a simple life rich with everyday small pleasures; or lead others towards a better future? Rajeev queried.
Underlying the dynamics of Working Memory and Executive Decision Making, Peshawaria said, "Here is where perspective taking, empathy, compassion, beliefs and perceptions come into play. Decide how you want people to experience you; what values will guide your behavior; and what values you will never compromise.
Comparing Eastern Metaphysics and Western Evidence, Peshawaria noted,"DNA experiments show that everything in the universe –humans, animals, plants and objects—is connected through a field of energy. Telepathy experiments show that human thoughts can travel through this energy field. Epigenetics (Biology of Belief) show that positive thoughts will bring about positive results. Water Molecules experiment shows that through deep prayer and/or concentration, humans can influence reality with their thoughts, thus empowering them to harness human energy towards the creation of a better future".
