JVP says foreign polls monitors utterly useless

By Dasun Edirisinghe

The JVP believes that it is useless to invite foreign election monitors for the Presidential Election on January 08 as their presence did not serve any purpose at the previous elections.

Foreign election monitors had been here for a few days on earlier occassions and prepared a report before leaving the country, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya has already invited the European Union, Commonwealth and Asian and SAARC election observers to monitor the January presidential poll.

Dissanayake said that persons who came to Sri Lanka as election monitors had no idea about the geography of the country and they groped in the dark.

A small team of monitors could not cover the entire country properly at a presidential election, the JVP leader said.
