by Don Asoka Wijewardena

An effective mosquito repellent is to be introduced to the market. It will be manufactured under the supervision of Ms. Indra Weerasinghe, Consultant Entomologist of the Medical Research Institute, with the assistance of the Sri Jayewardenepura University.

The repellent which is in the form of a spray, can be used at any time of the day. It will be manufactured using mainly plants.

Ms. Weerasinghe said that the feasibility study had been completed on the manufacturing process of the repellent.

She said that various natural plants found in rural areas would be used to manufacture the repellent, while some essential chemicals too would have to be imported. The Healthcare Ministry has already given the green light for the project.

Ms. Weerasinghe said that the repellent would be able to destroy any kind of mosquito as it contained powerful chemical substances and extracts of natural plants. It was ascertained through researches that the repellent would not be harmful to human beings and the environment.
