Lives of thousands of post-operative patients were in danger as essential life-saving injection (Ephedrine) has been out of stock in all government hospitals for the last two weeks.

All Ceylon Medical Officers’ Association (ACMOA), General Secretary Dr. Jayantha Bandara told The Island many post -operative patients could not be given the drug administered by consultant anaesthetists.

Dr. Bandara pointed out that Ephedrine injection was essential to treat post-surgery patients who had low-blood pressure.

It was the duty of the health authorities to maintain adequate stocks of essential drugs at hospitals at all times as shortages of life saving drugs could endanger the lives of post-surgery patients, the ACMOA General Secretary said.

Medical Supplies Division (MSD) Director Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe, contacted for comment, said that the stocks of Ephedrine injection had run out on Nov. 30. The next consignment would arrive in one week. For the time being the MSD had to purchase injection locally.

Dr. Jayasinghe added that he would ask all hospital directors to place orders with the MSD to obtain Ephedrine injection without delay as he had locally purchased adequate quantities of the injection.
