Police unhappy about jail attack probe

by Norman Palihawadena

The police are unhappy about the composition of the three-member committee appointed by the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prisons, to probe a recent attack on policemen by prisoner, during a search for banned items such as narcotics and mobile phones at the Welikada Jail.

High ranking Police sources said all three members of the committee were from the Prisons Department and they could not expect an impartial inquiry from such a committee. The police officers said the report would be submitted to the Ministry within the next few days and indications were that it would be one-sided.

Commenting on an earlier explanation by the Prisons Department that the Police had failed to give them advance notice about the raid, Police sources said that notice had been given to the Prisons two days ahead of the raid.

About fifty policemen including an SP were injured in the attack by the inmates and had to be hospitalised.

The CID is carrying out a separate investigation into the incident.
