The Ministry of Education has taken immediate measures to address the shortcomings in national schools islandwide, a senior official of the Ministry of Education told the Island.

"Nearly 50 officials have been assigned to inspect 339 national schools islandwide," Education Ministry Secretary Sunil Sirisena said.

The ministry is planning to finish the whole inspection process within three months.

"The officials in the team assigned will look into matters such as shortage of teachers, the different teaching methods adopted, extracurricular activities and excess teachers," he said.

On receipt of their observations, the ministry will take immediate steps to rectify shortcomings.

Currently, the ministry is in the process of collecting information to formulate a national education policy.

The ministry expects to make all the proposals before December 15th.

The opinions and proposals of various parties such as doctors, university staff and special education experts will be sought, Sirisena said.

Responding to a query, he said that though the international schools cannot directly be brought under the Ministry of Education, proposals have already been made to establish a regulatory mechanism to monitor them.
