Many are deaf and blind to opposition misdeeds

By Dasun Edirisinghe

Those who talked about good governance and criticised the government at every turn were blind to violence and irregularities committed by their own camp, the UPFA charged yesterday.

Addressing a media conference at the Sri Lanka Freedom Party head office, Youth Affairs and Skills Development Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that a gang from UNP headquarters Sirikotha attacked protesters who held a peaceful protest opposite the organisation on Wednesday, but a section of the media and other organisations who always shouted against the government were silent on the incident.

He said similarly a huge stash of foreign exchange was found from a close relative’s house of Opposition Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s son Daham’s girlfriend by the Criminal Investigation Department. The bag containing Swiss francs and US dollars were opened before the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate, but most media did not expose it much.

"If such an incident happened in a friend’s house of the President’s sons Namal or Yoshitha, what will be the response from the opposition and the media?" Alahapperuma asked.

He said that a member of the Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council who was brought to a media conference at the Maithripala Sirisena’s office recently praised President Rajapaksa and revealed lessons given to him by UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe to mislead the people against Rajapaksa. "The opposition activists and a section of media are also silent on that", he said.

The SLFP Treasurer said President Mahinda Rajapaksa was the only presidential candidate that presented a continuous programme in his manifesto for the third consecutive time.

"All presidential candidates changed their manifestos at each election, but President Rajapaksa continues his programme without changing it," he said.

Answering a query, Minister Alahapperuma said that National Youth Services Council coming under the purview of his ministry had not been politicised or brought under a family control as accused by the opposition.

He said that membership of the Federation of Youth Clubs had been increase from 187,000 to 700,000 during the Rajapaksa government.

Gampaha District MP Sudarshani Fernandopulle also spoke at the media conference.
