Ten foreigners rescued from Wasgamuwa National Park

Ten foreign tourists who had gone to watch elephants in the Wasgamuwa national park in Matale were rescued by the officials attached to the Disaster Management Ministry on Thursday.


Disaster Management Ministry, Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippily told The Island yesterday that though some parts of the Matale were in danger of possible earth-slips, so far no landslide tragedy had been reported. But due to the continuous heavy rainfall experienced some areas, especially Wasgamuwa area of Matale had been devastated.


Kodippily added that some villagers in the Wasgamuwa area had to be evacuated to safe places as a matter of great urgency as the Wasgamuwa area was fast going under water. Some houses had been partly damaged by on avalanche of rain water.
